The Groom's Cake

The Traditional Groom's Cake
As tradition goes, the groom's cake is a dark fruitcake or spice cake. The cake is baked in advance, cut up into small pieces and wrapped in monogrammed boxes for the guests to take home as mementos of the wedding. According to an old superstition, if a single woman sleeps with the cake box under her pillow that night, she'll dream of the man she is to marry.

Groom's Cakes in the Here and Now
The trend nowadays is to use the groom's cake as a way for the groom to have his own special part of the reception or rehearsal dinner. The groom’s cake is a perfect opportunity to add a personal touch to the reception. For example, if the groom is a avid golfer, have the cake made to look like a bag of golf clubs; if he is a die-hard U of M or MSU fan, decorate the cake with the university's logo or mascot. You get the point! So, if you decide that you want a groom's cake be creative!

These updated versions of the groom's cakes are typically done in chocolate instead of fruitcake. But you may use any flavor you wish or maybe even the groom's favorite flavor! Remember, the possibilities are endless, so have some fun with it!

Who Orders the Cake?
In most cases the bride will order the groom's cake and keep the design a secret until the wedding reception or rehearsal dinner. Any baker can make the cake, but it is usually very convenient to use the same baker who is making your wedding cake. Then both cakes can be delivered to the reception site at the same time.

Where Should We Display the Cake?
Many couples choose to display the wedding cake and groom's cake side by side at the wedding reception so the groom's cake can be served as a second desert option. Others prefer to serve the groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner. Either way is perfectly acceptable!
